Taxi and Bus Association of Zambia (TBAZ) Kulima Tower Bus Station Chairperson, Nicholas Banda, has urged passengers to report bus drivers and conductors who charge fares above the approved rates.
Mr Banda said passengers should not hesitate to report cases of overcharging to his office for appropriate action against those found violating the agreed fares.
Mr Banda said passengers could also use the Kulima Tower Bus Drivers Facebook page, which provides contact details for people seeking assistance.
Mr Banda explained that the government had only increased bus fares by K2 per passenger across all stations.
He said passengers who previously paid K15 were therefore expected to pay K17 under the revised fares.
Mr Banda said his office is committed to ensuring that bus drivers and conductors who overcharged passengers are disciplined.
He stressed that transport operators are expected to comply with the approved fares and avoid taking advantage of passengers.
However, Mr Banda has expressed concern that some passengers complaining about the fares did not board buses from Kulima Tower Bus Station, making it important to establish where the alleged overcharging is taking place.
He has advised passengers to provide clear information about their routes and the amounts charged to help authorities address the concerns effectively.
Mr Banda’s remarks follow complaints from some passengers who say they are paying more than the fares they understand to be approved.
Meanwhile, a passenger, Dexter Mumba, who boards buses from Kulima Tower Bus Station to Avondale, said conductors were charging K22 instead of K20.
Mr Mumba explained that the previous fare for the route was K18, and he expected the revised fare to be K20 following the K2 increase.
He expressed disappointment with the additional charges, saying the situation is inconvenient for passengers who rely on public transport for their daily movements.
Mr Mumba called for improved monitoring of bus fares to ensure that passengers are charged the correct amounts and protected from unnecessary transport costs.
