The motion was moved Tuesday by Vice President Mutale Nalumango after President Hakainde Hichilema formally requested parliamentary approval to establish, merge and dissolve ministries a requirement under Article 92(2)(d) of Zambia’s Constitution.
Under the approved structure, several key ministries will be split to create more focused portfolios:
The Ministry of Energy will be divided into two separate ministries Electricity and Petroleum as the resource-rich nation seeks to address persistent power challenges it faced in the past and develop its fuel sector.
The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry will also be split into the Ministry of Trade and Exports and the Ministry of Industry.
The Ministry of Education will be separated into the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Skills and Higher Education, while the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts will become the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
Mrs Nalumango, the restructuring is designed to align government operations with the administration’s “Grow Zambia” agenda, improve service delivery and provide more dedicated leadership for critical sectors of the economy.
The approval paves the way for President Hichilema to appoint new Cabinet ministers to head the newly created portfolios.
