Unknown persons have vandalised a 200KVA-11KV ZESCO transformer at Nyimba Correctional Compound in Nyimba District, resulting in the theft of copper windings valued at K202,884.95.
The incident which occurred between 23:00 hours on Monday, October 12, 2026 and 10:00 hours on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 was reported to Nyimba Police Station at 11:10 hours.
Eastern province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the development saying Nyimba Police Station received the report from Edris Chibesa, 32, of Samora 2 Compound, a ZESCO security officer at the Nyimba branch, who reported the matter on behalf of the company.
”The transformer was last checked by a maintenance team during patrols on Monday night and was found to be in normal working condition,” he said.
However, on Tuesday morning, the technical support team discovered that the transformer had been vandalised after receiving complaints from members of the public about a power outage.
Police officers who visited the scene confirmed the incident and found that the transformer had been damaged with its copper windings stolen.
”Investigations into the matter are ongoing,” the Commanding Officer has indicated.
