Multiple Countries Urge Households to Stockpile Food and Water Amid Rising Security Concerns

Governments across Europe and Asia are encouraging citizens to prepare emergency supplies at home, with the United Kingdom and Japan introducing fresh preparedness initiatives as several European countries maintain existing guidance for surviving major disruptions.

🇬🇧 The United Kingdom launched its “Be Ready” campaign on October 22, urging households to prepare essential supplies for at least 72 hours, including drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medicines and cash.

🇯🇵 Japan plans to issue a nationwide preparedness appeal on November 2, recommending that households keep at least three days of food, water and emergency toilet supplies, preferably enough for seven days. The initiative is focused on major natural disasters and interruptions to essential services.

🇩🇪 Germany has long advised households to maintain emergency reserves of food and water, with official guidance recommending supplies for around ten days.

🇳🇴 Norway has also promoted household emergency preparedness, recommending that residents be able to manage independently for at least one week.

Other European countries, including 🇸🇪 Sweden, 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇫🇷 France, 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇨🇿 Czechia, 🇧🇪 Belgium, 🇮🇪 Ireland and 🇦🇹 Austria, have their own civil-protection guidance covering emergency food, water and essential supplies.

The recommendations reflect concerns ranging from extreme weather and earthquakes to power outages, cyberattacks and other disruptions. Some European guidance also addresses military threats.

However, the initiatives do not establish that these countries expect a major war to begin imminently. The key development is a broader emphasis on household resilience and the ability to cope when emergency assistance or essential services are temporarily unavailable.
