Saise Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Remmy Sikazwe has called for the revival of traditional music in Mbala district.

Mr Sikazwe encouraged communities to establish cultural music groups to preserve and promote the Mambwe-Lungu heritage.

MP’s call follows the passing of musicians associated with the traditional hit song Palade, including Solo Kaselenga, whose deaths have left a gap in the local music scene.

He said there is a need for a new generation of musicians to carry forward the cultural legacy of the Mambwe‑Lungu people.

Mr Sikazwe emphasised that traditional music should reflect the community’s identity through the use of indigenous instruments, natural sounds and culturally significant songs.

“Traditional music is an important part of our identity, and we need to revive it by encouraging our people, especially the younger generation, to form cultural groups that will preserve and promote our Mambwe-Lungu heritage,” Mr Sikazwe said.

He has pledged to support groups committed to reviving traditional music and preserving traditional forms of entertainment.

Mr Sikazwe said traditional music will help safeguard cultural values, pass indigenous knowledge on to younger generations and showcase the history and traditions of the Mambwe-Lungu chiefdoms.

He added that the country’s ambition to attract more than five million tourists over the next five years presented an opportunity for Mbala district to promote its rich cultural heritage and stimulate local economic activity.

Mr Sikazwe notes that increased tourist arrivals will create opportunities for traditional musicians, dancers, and other local entrepreneurs if cultural activities were properly organised and promoted.

He has, therefore, called for concerted efforts to reorganise and strengthen Mambwe-Lungu cultural activities in anticipation of increased tourism.

Mr Sikazwe further stressed the importance of preserving indigenous traditions while creating opportunities for young people.

The proposed initiative will involve organising cultural performances, documenting traditional songs and instruments, and collaborating with traditional leaders and tourism stakeholders to ensure that the area’s cultural heritage is preserved and promoted.
