Serenje District Commissioner, Ellen Mibenge has urged mining companies to uphold human rights as they are a pillar of sustainable business and harmonious relations with local communities.

Ms Mibenge said mining companies should recognise that respecting human rights is not merely a legal obligation but an essential foundation for responsible business operations and long term development.

She was speaking during a Business and Human Rights engagement for mining companies in Serenje District in Central Province.

Ms Mibenge said mining firms have a responsibility to ensure that their operations respect the rights and welfare of the communities in which they operate.

She further urged mining companies to contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda by adopting responsible business practices that promote local employment, skills development and economic opportunities for surrounding communities.

Ms Mibenge said respect for human rights, coupled with fair labour practices and meaningful community engagement, could help create an enabling environment for inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods.

She also called on mining companies to strengthen their corporate social responsibility initiatives by responding to community priorities, particularly in education, health, water and sanitation, skills development and employment creation.

The District Commissioner further urged stakeholders to work closely with mining companies to monitor the social and environmental impacts of mining activities, resolve disputes and safeguard vulnerable groups within communities.

She said sustained collaboration among government, mining companies and local communities was essential to ensuring that mining activities contribute meaningfully to national development while protecting the rights and interests of affected communities.
