Kabwe District Commissioner Lennox Shimwambwa has urged farmers to venture into large-scale production of wheat and soya beans to contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda.

The national targets include producing 10 million tonnes of maize, generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity, attracting five million tourist arrivals, producing three million tonnes each of copper and soya beans, one million tonnes each of wheat and sugar, as well as generating US$1 billion in beef export revenue.

Mr Shimwambwa said  that the 3 million metric tonnes annual production targets for wheat and soya beans espoused in the Grow Zambia Agenda requires increased production by farmers.

He said the Grow Zambia Agenda will transform the country’s economy and create more jobs and wealth for the benefit of citizens.

Mr Shimwambwa said the national targets espoused in the Grow Zambia Agenda are attainable by 2031 but would require all the strategic sectors to up their act.

“Our farmers should embrace and support the attainment of our national targets outlined in the Grow Zambia Agenda. They need to produce more wheat and soya beans so that we can reach our annual national targets by 2031,” Mr Shimwambwa said.

He said the district administration will ensure Kabwe plays its part in the attainment of the national development goals.

Mr Shimwambwa also urged the farming community to continue working hard in maize production.

He said the bumper harvest the country has continued recording is a clear indication that Zambia is on the right path towards producing 10 million tonnes of maize annually by 2031.

Mr Shimwambwa said the government remains committed to implementing sound agricultural policies to enhance national food security and grow the economy.

He said the Grow Zambia Agenda will transform the country into one of the leading exporters of maize, wheat and soya beans in the region.
