My Exclusion from the Men’s League Commissioning Following a Difference of Opinion with Archbishop Alick Banda
I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the time i spent together with my brothers on this journey towards commissioning. It has been a privilege sharing this experience with you.
Unfortunately, I have been asked by the Parish Executive of the Men’s League to discontinue the programme following a Facebook post I made concerning Archbishop Alick Banda. In the said post, I expressed the view that Archbishop Alick Banda should not allow his personal differences with Government to drag the entire Catholic Church into matters that are essentially personal in nature.
According to the Executive, I am not suitable for commissioning at this stage and should instead wait for the next intake because the person I criticised in my post is the same person expected to commission me.
Do I regret making that comment? No, I do not. I firmly believe that personal differences should never be allowed to draw the Church into unnecessary conflict with Government. Such matters can and should be resolved amicably without involving the entire Church.
What I find particularly disturbing, however, is the apparent attempt by Archbishop Alick Banda, through the Men’s League Executive, to have me excluded from the commissioning programme simply because he disagrees with my opinion. This raises serious questions about tolerance, freedom of expression and the misuse of the Church’s authority against those who hold different views.
It is particularly ironic that Archbishop Alick Banda expects Government to demonstrate tolerance towards differing opinions, yet appears unwilling to extend the same tolerance to someone who has expressed a contrary view about him. In my opinion, this is a clear demonstration of double standards and hypocrisy. Even the delegation sent to communicate this decision struggled to provide a convincing explanation for it.
For the avoidance of doubt, I do not regret expressing my opinion. I remain firm in my belief that the Church must not be drawn into personal or political differences, and that no one should be made to feel unwelcome simply for holding a different opinion.
I sincerely wish each and every one of you well in your continued journey. May God guide you, strengthen you and grant you wisdom as you continue serving Him.
God bless you all.
