President Félix Tshisekedi has publicly reiterated his strong dissatisfaction with the country’s current Constitution while addressing lawmakers from his ruling coalition, the Union Sacrée.
Speaking before deputies and senators of the Union Sacrée, Tshisekedi stated:
“I believe I have already said it — I do not like this Constitution, but one should not link any change to the Constitution with any desire on my part to cling to power.”
The remarks, captured in video circulating widely, come amid ongoing political debate in the DRC over potential constitutional reforms and the approach of the end of Tshisekedi’s second term in 2028. The 2006 Constitution limits the president to two terms.
Tshisekedi has previously told members of his majority that the decision to revise or “touch” the Constitution is their responsibility, while emphasizing that his priority remains putting the country “on the rails” and establishing lasting peace.
Opposition figures have sharply criticized the statements, arguing that the president swore an oath to respect and defend the Constitution and that personal dislike of the text does not justify attempts to alter term limits.
The comments have intensified national discussion about the future of the Constitution and the country’s institutional framework.
Video of the president’s remarks is currently circulating on social media.
