Governance Activist and Political Commentator Sam Zulu has called on the government to continue to uphold the rule of law.
Mr Zulu urged the government to strengthen the rule of law, protect democratic institutions and promote national unity.
Mr Zulu said the government’s commitment to peace, stability and the rule of law is important for economic growth, adding that investors, farmers and small businesses need a safe and fair environment to operate and expand Zambia’s economy.
He stressed that the government’s commitment must be demonstrated through equal application of the law, regardless of political affiliation.
He further said independent institutions such as the Judiciary, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Human Rights Commission (HRC) should operate without political interference.
Mr Zulu advised that arrests and prosecution must be based on evidence and due process, with citizens’ rights to fair trials, bails and legal representation respected.
He has encouraged the general public to maintain peace and political stability by resolving disputes through dialogue and courts rather than violence, hate speech and misinformation.
“Politicians, traditional leaders, churches and civil society organisations also have a responsibility to promote national unity and condemn violence among their supporters”, he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Zulu has also commended Zambia on its election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term, adding that the development as a significant milestone that will raise the country’s international profile while placing greater responsibility on Zambia to protect human rights.
“Zambia should demonstrate its commitment by protecting freedom of expression, assembly, association and the media as well as strengthening institutions that citizen’s access justice,” he added.
He further said the country should cooperate with the United Nations Human Rights mechanisms and implement recommendations aimed at protecting vulnerable groups including women, children and persons with disabilities.
Mr Zulu has since called for peace, national unity, respect for human rights and rule of law for Zambia’s sustainable development and shared future.
