The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has handed over 24 bicycles to Luampa District to strengthen Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Education (WASHE) activities in the district.
Handing over the bicycles, Acting District Administrative Officer, James Munenga, urged community WASH champions to utilise the bicycles effectively.
“We expect the WASH champions to put these bicycles to good use by promoting sustainable water use, sanitation and hygiene practices in their communities,” Mr Munenga said.
And Luampa Town Council Secretary, Isaac Mwale, said the government has broadened WASH activities to include climate resilience programmes and infrastructure such as irrigation schemes.
“Government has broadened WASHE activities to include climate resilience programmes and infrastructure such as irrigation schemes in order to improve livelihoods and strengthen communities against the effects of climate change,” Mr Mwale said.
Mr Mwale also called on stakeholders to continue partnering with the government in the provision of clean water to build resilient communities.
Meanwhile, Community WASHE Champion, Pasco Malyatela, thanked the government for the support, saying the bicycles will improve the implementation of WASH activities in communities.
“These bicycles will help us reach more people with messages on water, sanitation and hygiene and strengthen our work in the communities,” Mr Malyatela said.
Speaking at the same event, Christian Brothers Western Cluster Project Programme Officer, Akakulubelwa Akabondo, said the organisation remains committed to complementing the government’s efforts in improving access to clean water and promoting climate-resilient livelihoods.
“The two solar-powered irrigation schemes and nine boreholes are aimed at enhancing water accessibility, strengthening food security and building climate resilience among communities in Luampa District,” Mr Akabondo said.
