The Zambian Government has condemned the chanting of political slogans by some individuals during the Super League match between Nkana FC and Makeni All Stars at Nkana Stadium on Saturday, October 10, 2026, warning that political activities at football matches could threaten peace and undermine the spirit of sport.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, October 11, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts said the conduct was unacceptable and had no place in sport, which should unite people across political and social divides.
Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said football stadiums should remain places where supporters gather to cheer their teams rather than platforms for advancing political agendas.
“Sport must not be used as a platform for advancing political agendas. Such conduct undermines the spirit of sport and risks turning football grounds into centres of political confrontation,” Chileshe said.
The Permanent Secretary warned that allowing political activities at football matches could provoke rival groups, create unnecessary tension and potentially lead to violence.
He stressed that stadiums must remain safe spaces for players, match officials and supporters, adding that individuals should refrain from conduct that threatens peace and order at sporting events.

The Ministry has called on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), the Zambia Premier League and football clubs to take firm action to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
Chileshe urged the football governing bodies and clubs to caution their supporters, strengthen sensitisation campaigns and ensure political chants and activities are not tolerated during matches.
He further emphasised that clubs must take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters, warning that the incident at Nkana Stadium should not be allowed to establish a precedent for political mobilisation at football grounds.
The Government reiterated that sport is a national asset that must be protected from political interference, calling on supporters to uphold discipline, respect and sportsmanship.
According to the Ministry, football should continue to provide a common ground where Zambians from different backgrounds unite in support of their teams, rather than become a source of political confrontation.
The statement was issued by Nchimunya Ng’andu, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts.
The Government’s position places renewed emphasis on the responsibility of football authorities, clubs and supporters to maintain order and preserve the unifying role of the game as Zambia’s domestic football season continues.
