The new day will be known as the National Day of Prayer and Christian Heritage, combining the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation and the commemoration of Zambia’s declaration as a Christian Nation.
In a statement issued after engagements with the Office of the Vice President, the Churches said:
“Following the consultations with the Government of the Republic of Zambia, going forward, the 29th December, 2026 will be the first commemoration of the merged National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation with the commemoration of the Declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation under the name: National Day of Prayer and Christian Heritage.”
The Mother Bodies have called on all Zambians to approach the day as an opportunity for prayer and reflection on Zambia’s Christian heritage.
The development follows consultations with government aimed at ensuring the national observance remains orderly, inclusive and meaningful.
