A Ndola-based Catholic priest has called for a change in mindset and responsible citizenship, saying Government’s efforts to create cleaner and healthier communities must be matched by a change in people’s attitudes and behaviour.

Chifubu Parish Assistant Priest, Fr Donald Mwepu, has condemned the indiscriminate disposal of garbage and other irresponsible practices, arguing that citizens should not blame Government for challenges they themselves contribute to through their actions.

Fr Mwepu has also backed the Lusaka city clean-up agenda, urging citizens to take collective responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings and supporting efforts to prevent disease outbreaks, including cholera.

Delivering his Sunday homily, Fr Mwepu stressed that Government’s efforts to promote public health and sanitation would only achieve the desired results if citizens embraced discipline and responsible environmental practices.

“Government is doing all it can to prevent diseases like cholera, but irresponsible citizens are doing the opposite by throwing garbage indiscriminately and blocking the very drainage systems meant to channel water,” he said.

He further raised concern over what he described as a contradiction between public complaints about medicine shortages and allegations that some health workers undermine efforts to ensure medicines are available in health facilities.

Fr Mwepu emphasised that building cleaner and healthier cities requires more than Government interventions, calling for a collective commitment to responsible behaviour, environmental cleanliness and respect for public infrastructure.

He said a change in mindset was essential if communities were to overcome preventable sanitation challenges and create a healthier environment for all.
