A Catholic clergy in Monze, Father Cletus Mwiila, has urged the church to support the government’s Grow Zambia Agenda by actively contributing to national development.
Father Mwiila also called on Christians to continue praying for President Hakainde Hichilema so that God grants him wisdom and guidance as he governs the nation.
He noted that the church has a critical role to play in complementing the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of citizens and foster national development.
Father Mwiila said this during a thanksgiving Mass to celebrate the 99th birthday of John Michelo of Kayuni settlement in Monze district.
And in his homily, Father Mwiila urged congregants to emulate Mr Michelo’s spirit of generosity, selflessness and dedication to the work of God.
He described Mr Michelo as a committed Christian who has demonstrated his faith through service to the Church for several decades.
Father Mwiila cited Mr Michelo’s contribution towards the establishment of the Catholic Church in Kayuni in 1979, including offering land for the construction of the church in his settlement, supporting priests and maintaining the church surroundings.
He further encouraged Christians to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving and always appreciate God’s blessings.
Drawing from Luke Chapter 17, verses 11 to 19, which recounts the healing of ten lepers, Father Mwiila reminded congregants that only one of the ten returned to thank Jesus after being healed.
He urged Christians not to take God’s blessings for granted but to remain grateful in all circumstances.
Mr Michelo, who was among 38 people allocated land by government at Kayuni settlement, is one of only four surviving members of the original group.
In 1979, he was entrusted with helping to establish the Catholic Church in the area and has since remained committed to its growth, serving as a catechist then and supporting the clergy.
His dedication to the Church extended to personally clearing weeds around the church premises during the rainy season and travelling long distances on foot to fulfil his Christian responsibilities.
The thanksgiving Mass brought together family members, friends and members of the Catholic community to celebrate Mr Michelo’s 99 years of life, faith and service to the Church.
