The Zambia Union of Professional Educators (ZUPED) has commended Government for introducing the free education policy which has enabled more than 2.6 million learners to return to school.

ZUPED Director for Administration Sharon Mutukwa, says the Government has recorded notable development in the education sector.

Speaking during the Teachers’ Day commemoration in Chilanga today, Ms Mutukwa cited the recruitment of more than 42,000 teachers since 2022, the construction of over 2,800 classroom blocks, new secondary schools, the provision of approximately 1.5 million desks among others.

“These interventions have contributed to learner retention and improved the education sector,” she observed.

Meanwhile, Chilanga Acting District Commissioner, Maureen Chilende urged teachers to support learners facing challenges such as teenage pregnancy, absenteeism and school dropouts.

Officiating at the commemoration, Ms Chilende noted that the implementation of the Re-entry Policy gives teenage mothers an opportunity to return to school and continue their education.

She also commended schools participating in the Presidential Irrigation Initiative Programme, saying it equips learners with practical agricultural skills and contributes to the school feeding programme.

She further urged parents and communities to work closely with teachers to foster quality education.

“Education is a shared responsibility and our children’s success requires all of us to play our part,” Ms Chilende said.

Chilanga South Member of Parliament, Ngenda Situmbeko said the government prioritises education and is working to provide teachers with a conducive working environment.

“The government is doing everything possible to ensure that teachers have a conducive working environment because we need skilled manpower to grow the economy,” Mr Situmbeko said.

And Chilanga District Education Board Secretary, Lenny Longwe, in a poetic speech, praised teachers for their impact on society, describing them as multitaskers who contribute greatly to shaping the future of children.
