Isoka Gender Sub-Committee Vice Chairperson Exilda Muuka has called for stronger collaboration and increased sensitisation to protect vulnerable groups from Technology-Facilitated Violence (TFV)

Ms Muuka says people living in remote areas and young people who are not adequately exposed to information on digital safety are at increased risk of falling prey to technology-facilitated violence.

She was speaking during a sensitisation meeting held at LIMSET in Isoka yesterday, organised by the Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC).

Ms Muuka said stakeholders should strengthen collaboration and take sensitisation programmes to communities to ensure that people, especially those in hard-to-reach areas, are aware of the risks associated with TFV.

“Those in remote areas and the younger ones who are not exposed to this information are at risk of falling prey to this form of GBV,” she said.

She says increasing access to mobile phones and social media platforms requires communities to also understand how technology can be misused to perpetrate violence and abuse.

And NGOCC representative, Mendai Imasiku said technology-facilitated GBV refers to the use of digital technologies and online platforms to commit, facilitate or amplify violence against individuals, particularly women and girls.

Ms Imasiku says the vice can take different forms, including cyberbullying, online harassment, cyberstalking, impersonation, sextortion and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

“Technology has made communication easier, but it has also created new spaces where perpetrators can abuse and intimidate others,” she said.

Ms Imasiku said women, girls, persons with disabilities, are key population, marginalised, further saying that young people and those with limited access to information are among the groups that can be particularly vulnerable to TFV.

She said victims can suffer psychological distress, social isolation, reputational damage and, in some cases, economic and physical consequences as a result of online abuse.

“The effects of technology-facilitated violence do not end when someone logs off. The abuse can affect a person’s mental wellbeing, relationships, education and participation in society,” Ms Imasiku said.

Ms Imasiku has since called for increased community awareness and stronger referral mechanisms to ensure that victims know where to seek support and report cases.

She said communities should also encourage responsible use of technology and ensure that children and young people are equipped with knowledge on how to protect themselves from online abuse.

The meeting brought together stakeholders to raise awareness on emerging forms of gender-based violence and the need for coordinated community responses.
