The Zambia Cyber Security Agency (ZCSA) has urged members of the public to adopt safe online practices and report suspected cybercrimes, as investigations continue into the alleged murder of two young women of Kabwe by a 17-year-old boy in pursuit of wealth.

Speaking in a telephone interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, ZCSA Research, Awareness and Education Director, Edgar Mlauzi, said the public should adopt the Stop, Think, Verify and Act (STVA) approach to protect themselves against cybercrime and online scams.

Mr Mlauzi further highlighted that suspected cybercrime incidents, including scam messages and fraudulent activities, should be reported to relevant authorities, while related messages and conversations should be preserved as evidence.

And, Mr Mlauzi indicated that the agency conducts awareness programmes beyond Cybersecurity Awareness Month of October, including sensitisation activities during the 16 Days of Gender Activism in November, to promote safer digital spaces.

He explained that during this awareness month, the agency planned to conduct radio programmes, visit shopping malls and engage schools and other institutions to educate the public on online safety.

“There is a need to partner with the media in disseminating cybersecurity information and educating the public on how to identify and respond to online threats,” said Mr Mlauzi.

He also encouraged young people to explore opportunities in cybersecurity and digital innovation through education, training and innovation programmes.

Mr Mlauzi further urged young people to engage in productive online activities, saying responsible use of digital platforms is essential to promoting a safer cyberspace and contributing to national digital development.

Meanwhile, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Central Zambia, Emmanuel Chikoya, said wealth creation requires hard and smart work, adding that alternative means of acquiring wealth are unsustainable and unacceptable.

“There should be zero tolerance towards individuals promoting such practices,” Reverend Chikoya said.

He urged members of the public to report such individuals to the relevant authorities and called for thorough investigations into the murder of the two young women to ensure that anyone suspected of influencing or facilitating the crime was held accountable.

Rev Chikoya also urged young people to develop their skills, establish businesses and find innovative ways of addressing community needs, saying creativity, invention and hard work are sustainable pathways to financial independence.

Psychologist, Darlington Mwendabai, said the 17-year-old boy could have been influenced by his family background, upbringing and environment, noting that parental absence, family conflicts and neglect could contribute to behavioural challenges among young people.

Mr Mwendabai noted that adolescents are still developing decision-making and impulse-control skills, making them vulnerable to peer pressure, manipulation, economic desperation and harmful beliefs that rituals could bring wealth.

He urged young people facing difficult circumstances to seek psychological support and confide in trusted people rather than resorting to harmful actions.
