Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia and Malawi, Gian Luca Perici, has described the 100 years of existence of the Sisters of the Child Jesus (SCJ), as a testimony of God’s faithfulness and unwavering dedication to serving humanity.

Most Reverend Perici says the congregation’s journey from a humble beginning a century ago to its current position is a story of courage, sacrifice and total trust in God.

The Vatican Ambassador to Zambia and Malawi said this during the centenary celebration of the Sisters of the Child Jesus at Chilubula Mission in Kasama yesterday.

“We are here to celebrate a great milestone. 100 years ago, this congregation began from a humble beginning. Throughout this period, the Lord has guided your journey which has not been easy,” Archbishop Perici said.

The Nuncio disclosed that despite numerous challenges over the decades, the Sisters have remained steadfast and have continued to be a visible sign of God’s love, especially to the most vulnerable people in society.

“Despite numerous challenges, you have continued to show God’s love,” he said.

The Nuncio, who is the Pope’s representative, paid special tribute to the founding members of the congregation, describing them as brave women whose vision and faith laid a strong foundation for the works being seen today.

“We thank God for the brave women who started this mission. We thank the women who have stood firm for this organisation. Your work in health and education is commendable, you have always remembered the poor, giving them comfort,” he said.

He added that the centenary celebration is not only a moment to look back at the past with gratitude, but also an opportunity to look at the present with joy and to the future with hope.

“As we celebrate the present, we see how God continues to bless your congregation. God has sustained you and He is still doing great things through you. I encourage you to stay united. Continue to live out your calling with love, serve the people with total dedication, do not be afraid of what lies ahead,” he said.

Meanwhile, Archbishop of Kasama Archdiocese, Ignatius Chama, called on members of the Sisters of the Child Jesus to continue supporting and appreciating one another as they fulfill God’s work.

Archbishop Chama urged the Sisters to rediscover their vocation of love and to remain true to their identity.

“To find your vocation of love, look, it is who you are,” Archbishop Chama said.

He said the Sisters should remain rooted in love, unity and service which defines their congregation.

Archbishop Chama also thanked the Apostolic Nuncio for accepting to celebrate the milestone with the Sisters of the Child Jesus.

The Sisters of the Child Jesus are a diocesan congregation founded in Chilubula, in the Archdiocese of Kasama in 1926 by Bishop Étienne Larue, a Missionary of Africa.
