And the President indicated that his government will continue with various reforms across different sectors including in energy, mining and education, noting that reforms have delivered positively for the country.
Speaking during the Presidential approbation ceremony for the re-elected Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti and her two deputies, Malungo Chisangano and Nshamba Muzungu at State House, the Head of state said patriotism should shape both deliberations and conduct of the house as laws enacted will reflect on the development of the country.
The Head of State implored the three presiding leaders of the National Assembly to effectively guide the house by ensuring that every voice is heard and national interest takes precedence.
He noted that national diversity is the strength of the country, as every value extracted from all parts of Zambia should be cherished.
President Hichilema clearly indicated that no law maker is second to none and that everyone should be treated equally regardless of the political party to which they were voted in.
And he said that Parliament must unite the people through factual and respectful debates, while also calling for fair representation.
“To you Madam Speaker of the National Assembly, through your guidance in the house must embed the One Zambia, One nation and One people motto consciously. We have various political parties with one shared responsibility to advance the interest of the people,” President Hichilema stated.
Congratulating the trio, he noted that their selection to preside over the affairs of the National Assembly carries the trust of the House and is a reflection of the confidence in their ability to provide leadership and firm direction.
The President added that the election process at Parliament earlier today will remain historic because of the diverse composition of the MPs that elected the trio, including 20 women, 15 young people and five persons living with disabilities selected under the mixed member proportional representation.
He attributed the development to the constitutional reforms through the enactment of bill 10, describing it as a revolutionary decision.
“I have no doubt that the composition reflects the will and a clear endorsement from the Zambian people,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Mutti described her re-election as speaker which went unopposed as a privilege, noting that it shows that the House still has confidence in her leadership.
“The 14th National Assembly has come at a good time when the policy of the government is to Grow Zambia, and in whatever we do as a house our deliberations will be channeled towards that,” Mrs Mutti stated.
