President Hakainde Hichilema is tomorrow expected to officially open the First Session of the 14th National Assembly, where he is expected to outline Government’s policy direction and priorities for the 2026–2027 period.
The official opening will mark the commencement of parliamentary business under the new composition of the National Assembly following the enactment of Act No. 13 of 2025, which expanded representation in the House.
Before the enactment of the legislation, the National Assembly comprised 156 elected Members, eight nominated Members, the Speaker, the Vice-President and the First Deputy Speaker, bringing the total membership to 167.
Under the new arrangement, the House comprises 226 elected Members, 11 nominated Members and 40 Proportional Representation Members, including women, youths and persons with disabilities.
The Speaker, Vice-President and First Deputy Speaker bring the total composition to 280 Members.
The expanded composition is intended to increase representation and provide broader participation in national decision-making.
President Hichilema’s address is expected to set out the Government’s priorities and policy direction as the country begins a new parliamentary session.
