Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, has called for improved access to energy to enhance productivity for citizens to contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda.
Dr Mwanakampwe says ensuring that all citizens have access to electricity is key to promoting economic growth and development.
He was speaking in Kabwe when a multisectoral team from the energy sector on a mission to commemorate the energy week, paid a courtesy call on him today.
Dr Mwanakampwe emphasised the need for citizens to use alternative energy sources in view of climate change which has been affecting hydro power supply.
He however noted that the use of charcoal should not be encouraged as it contributes to the depletion of forest cover and climate change.
And Ministry of Energy Principal Renewable Energy Officer, Agnelu Kafuwe, also dispelled misconceptions that charcoal is cheap, saying it is expensive in the long run and also costs the environment.
Mr Kafuwe explained that the energy awareness week is intended to raise awareness about the works of the energy sector, and encourage the use of alternative energy sources, particularly in the petroleum and electricity subsectors.
He explained that the team will conduct a number of activities starting on Wednesday.
Mr Kafuwe said among the activities to be conducted will be a public display at the Mukuyu tree in the Central Business District (CBD) and campaigns among schools in Kabwe.
