Milenge District Livestock and Fisheries Officer, Chongo Kafula, says the district has maintained a clean record this year, with zero cases of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) and other major livestock diseases.

‎Mr Kafula has attributed the district’ success as being tied to its location within Luapula Province, which is officially designated as a livestock disease-free zone.

‎

He stated that the area has not recorded significant outbreaks of tick-borne diseases or other livestock conditions so far this year.

‎

‎“Those major diseases I have mentioned are not in Luapula, so even in Milenge, they are not there,” he disclosed.

‎Mr Kafula however, explained that livestock vaccination exercises could still be conducted once relevant authorities consider it necessary especially, as a proactive measure to protect the province’s disease-free status, particularly in light of animal movements from other regions.

‎

‎He cited when the district had previously conducted vaccinations against Lumpy Skin Disease in 2023 and 2025, with the most recent exercise covering over 35 cattle.

‎

‎”It is for this reason that collectively maintaining robust surveillance and appropriate veterinary interventions remains critical to safeguarding the province’s prized disease-free status,” he said.

‎

He has since urged local livestock farmers to remain vigilant and report any suspected disease cases promptly to allow for timely intervention.
