The Department of Health in Kasenengwa District, Eastern Province, has intensified Indoor Residual Spraying in households following a sharp rise in malaria cases.

The district recorded more than 22,000 malaria cases in the second quarter of 2026, representing a 277 percent increase compared to the first quarter.

Kasenengwa District Health Director Naphtaly Phiri said the initiative was expected to reduce malaria cases by ensuring households were sprayed against mosquitoes.

Dr. Phiri urged communities to cooperate with teams implementing the programme to strengthen efforts to combat malaria.

He said Community-Based Volunteers had been engaged to sensitise residents on the importance of the exercise and encourage households to participate.

Meanwhile, Headman Kanamanja’s Induna, Kenneth Zulu, welcomed the initiative, saying it would help protect communities from malaria.

Mr Zulu urged community members, particularly traditional leaders, to support the programme, noting that Government had invested significant resources in efforts to protect the population from the disease.
