The number of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases is on the rise in Kasama District of Northern Province.
Kasama One Stop Center Psychosocial Counselor, Matilda Mbalamweshi has revealed that the centre is receiving between six and nine Gender Based Violence cases every day.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Ms Mbalamweshi has cited sexual and physical assaults as among the majority cases being reported.
She said about three of the cases recorded daily are usually sexual assault cases.
“We are receiving about six to nine GBV cases every day, and among these, about three are usually sexual assault cases,” she said.
“We also attend to physical assault and other forms of abuse, and all these cases have increased,” she added.
She has since called on stakeholders to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing Gender Based Violence and ensuring that survivors receive the necessary support.
“I call upon stakeholders to come on board and work to help fight gender-based violence and ensure that survivors receive the support they need,” she said.
And Bakashana Basambilile Gender Programme Officer, Mercy Chizyuka has called on traditional leaders to take an active role in the fight against Gender Based Violence in communities.
Ms Chizyuka said traditional leaders are key gatekeepers in their communities and can play an important role in preventing Gender Based Violence.
“Traditional leaders are gatekeepers in our communities, they understand the effects of Gender-Based Violence and the impact it has on individuals, families and communities, it will be easier for organisations to work with them in addressing these cases,” she said.
She indicated that stronger collaboration with traditional leaders will help organisations reach communities more effectively and strengthen awareness on the dangers of Gender Based Violence.
