Kalumbila District Commissioner, Brenda Sankisa, has commended Kalumbila Town Council and its cooperating partners for organising the Council’s first-ever marathon aimed at promoting physical fitness, healthy living and community unity.

Ms Sankisa was speaking during the marathon held under the theme, “For a Healthier Kalumbila,” held over the weekend.

She thanked Barrick Lumwana and other cooperating partners for supporting the event, saying physical fitness should be part of everyday life to promote a healthy and productive nation.

Ms Sankisa said an active population is essential for national development, adding that regular physical activity contributes to healthier and more productive citizens.

Kalumbila Town Council Chairperson, Shadrick Munjunga, said the marathon was more than a race, describing it as a symbol of unity and development in the district.

Mr Munjunga said the event brought together people from different parts of Kalumbila and beyond, demonstrating the importance of unity and collaboration in promoting community development.

He also thanked local stakeholders for their participation and support, noting that partnerships are important as the district continues to grow.

Speaking on behalf of Barrick Lumwana Mining Company, James Mashimango, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working with the local authority to promote community health.

Mr Mashimango said a healthy population is important to achieving the objectives of the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Meanwhile, 21-kilometre race winners, Collins Mbimbi and Elizabeth Mukoloma, both based in Solwezi described the marathon as exciting and enjoyable.

The winners said the event provided an opportunity to interact with other runners and meet new people while promoting physical fitness.

The marathon featured 5, 10 and 21-kilometre races for both men and women.

Winners in the 10 and 21-kilometre categories received K3000 for first place, K2000 for second place and K1500 for third place, while the five-kilometre category was conducted as a trial run.

The event was aimed to encourage more residents to embrace physical activity and adopt healthier lifestyles.
