🇿🇲 MORNING WIRE | Jay Jay Banda: What We Know This Morning

While Zambia slept, discussions intensified across opposition WhatsApp groups, Telegram channels and livestreams over the reported capture of fugitive former Petauke Central MP Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda. The developments come as Zimbabwean police have officially confirmed working with Zambia to locate five wanted individuals, including Banda. Meanwhile, government and ruling-party sources have confirmed his capture to our newsroom, although a formal announcement remains outstanding.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the cross-border cooperation in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police, through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, is working closely with the Zambia Police Service in strengthening cross-border police cooperation and combating transnational crime within the region.”

The statement, subsequently carried by Zimbabwe’s The Herald and other publications, identified Banda, Kaizar Peter Zulu, Enock Mwanza, Robert Ng’uni and Susan Chileshe as individuals wanted in connection with separate criminal matters.

Banda is wanted over alleged aggravated robbery, attempted murder and escaping from lawful custody. Zulu faces allegations involving a motor vehicle, threatening violence and assault. The remaining three are wanted over alleged cybercrime offences.

Nyathi said the suspects were believed to be in Zimbabwe and appealed for public assistance in locating them.

“The individuals are believed to be in Zimbabwe and the Police are appealing to members of the public for any information which may assist in establishing their whereabouts and facilitate appropriate lawful action in accordance with the applicable legal and police cooperation frameworks.”

The announcement provides important context to claims that Banda was captured in neighbouring Mozambique on Wednesday evening.

Opposition media chairperson Emmanuel Mwamba gave details of the alleged operation during a livestream.

“I can confirm that Jay Jay Banda has been captured by Zambian authorities. He was not in Zimbabwe but in Mozambique, where he was hiding. I know he was previously in Zimbabwe, but he had since moved to Mozambique. Three vehicles pulled up at his hideout and took him.”

Mwamba said he could not establish Banda’s condition following the reported operation.

Former Nkana MP Binwell Mpundu went further, claiming Banda had been taken to Maina Soko Military Hospital in Lusaka.

“MIRACLE WAS ABDUCTED LAST EVENING,THEY HAVE JUST ARRIVED AT MAINA SOKO HOSPITAL,” Mpundu wrote on Facebook.

UK-based opposition commentator Lillian Mutambo and another commentator identified as Augustine, operating from the United States, are also among those discussing Banda’s reported capture.

Accounts circulating within these opposition networks claim a joint task force involving the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and other security units travelled through Zimbabwe before entering Mozambique.

Zumbo, in northwestern Mozambique, lies near the meeting point of Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Chimoio, another location mentioned in the accounts, is farther east in Manica Province.

The exact location of the alleged operation has not been established.

Sources close to the matter have separately confirmed Banda’s capture to our editorial team.

Opposition contacts also describe a communication blackout involving Banda, who has not made a fresh public broadcast since Wednesday; and attempts by associates to reach him have reportedly failed.

Attention within the same networks has now shifted towards the possible consequences for people who maintained contact with Banda, including civil servants.

One civil servant, speaking anonymously, accused the government of targeting people associated with opposition leaders. The source alleged that the August election had been manipulated and that authorities were now pursuing individuals linked to Brian Mundubile, Mwamba, Mutambo and ‘JJ’ Banda.

A second female civil servant acknowledged communicating with Banda but rejected suggestions that she had leaked confidential government information.

“I’m just a supporter of them, nothing like leaking government information,” she said.

The concerns come amid recent retirements of public officers in the national interest, which opposition figures have described as a purge.

Some opposition contacts fear that authorities may be withholding an announcement about Banda while conducting wider investigations, including possible examination of communications with individuals inside government institutions.

No official link has been established between those retirements and Banda’s reported capture.

For now, Zimbabwe’s police statement confirms an active cross-border search involving five wanted Zambians. Opposition figures have publicly reported Banda’s capture, while sources within government and the ruling party have provided similar information to this publication.

Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo, however, said Thursday that he had no information confirming Banda’s arrest.

The questions now are where Banda is being held, which agencies conducted the reported operation, whether Mozambican authorities were involved and when the Zambian government will address the claims.
