Breaking: Hichilema Ends Silence, Speculation Over Disappearance

By Staff Reporter | Lusaka, 19 October 2026

For the first time since 9 October 2026 — a span of 10 days — President Hakainde Hichilema has publicly addressed speculation surrounding his silence, ending weeks of conjecture.

Speaking today at the 20th Ordinary Session of the Regional Inter Ministerial Committee of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), held at the InterContinental Hotel in Lusaka, Hichilema used his official Facebook page to confirm his presence and officiation.

The post, which read “Tell us where you are watching from”, marked the President’s first direct engagement with the public since the August date, effectively closing a chapter of uncertainty.

The announcement is being described as one of the most consequential public statements in Zambia’s recent political history, given the heightened speculation that had surrounded the President’s silence.

By officiating at the meeting, Hichilema scuttles mounting reports of his loud public absence in recent days.

With the speculation now officially ended, for now, attention shifts to the outcomes of the Lusaka high court where Brian Mundubile, Makebi Zulu, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, George Chisanga and others are seeking constitutional bail for prolonged detention.

The matter has been moved to Wednesday 21st October at 08:30 am this week, its not clear whether the accused remain in Lusaka or get bussed back to Kabwe, 150kms away.
