A three-year-old boy has been trampled to death by an elephant in Kamalalo area of Kasempa District, while his two sisters escaped unharmed.
North-Western Province Commanding Officer Brighton Siwale confirmed the incident in a statement to the media, stating that the incident occurred between 04:00 and 05:00 hours on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Mr Siwale said the elephant first charged at a man travelling to the area to purchase a farm and that the man escaped by running to the nearest village, where he sought refuge in an open shelter.
He said the elephant destroyed the shelter before losing sight of the man and turning its attention to a nearby thatched house where the boy and his two sisters were sleeping.
“The two sisters managed to escape, but the three-year-old boy, Mathews Moonga, could not make it and was trampled to death,” he said.
Mr Siwale said community members who emerged following the commotion managed to scare the elephant away, forcing it to retreat into the forest.
He said the boy’s body was taken to Mukinge Mission Hospital, where an examination revealed a deep cut on the forehead, a fractured left leg and bruises all over the body.
Mr Siwale said the body had been placed in the hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination and burial arrangements.
