DEMOCRATS WIN THE HOUSE AND SENATE — TRUMP FACES A NEW POLITICAL REALITY

The world was watching and waiting. Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in a sweeping defeat for Republicans, changing the balance of power for Donald Trump’s remaining two years in office.

Democrats have secured 53 Senate seats against 42 Republicans, with five races still uncalled. In the House, Democrats have won 220 seats—above the 218 needed for a majority—against 129 Republicans, with 86 races still to be called.

For Ukraine, this creates an opportunity for stronger congressional support and greater scrutiny of Washington’s decisions. Attempts to withhold assistance, weaken sanctions or pressure Kyiv into accepting a dangerous settlement could now encounter stronger resistance in both chambers.

The House can investigate the administration, demand documents and challenge its spending priorities. Democratic control of the Senate adds another significant check: the ability to scrutinize and block presidential nominees, shape legislation and hold senior officials accountable through committee hearings.

Those trying to negotiate Ukraine’s future over its head will have to reckon with this changed political landscape. Once the new Congress takes office in January, the administration will face opposition majorities with the authority to demand answers publicly.

Trump remains president, with substantial foreign policy powers and a presidential veto. But his ability to advance his agenda through a Republican-controlled House and Senate is ending. Democrats now have to turn their electoral victory into action: dependable assistance, weapons delivered and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Politically, the closing chapter of the Trump presidency has begun. For Ukraine, the measure of this moment will be what follows it.
