Chitambo District Commissioner, Marjory Mwape has urged teachers, learners and parents at Lusenga Secondary School to safeguard the Presidential Irrigation Initiative Programme (PIIP).
Ms Mwape says the irrigation facility must be protected for the benefit of both current and future learners.
She was speaking when she visited Lusenga Secondary School to appreciate the implementation of the PIIP at the institution.
“This is a government investment meant to benefit the school and learners. I urge everyone to take responsibility and protect the irrigation infrastructure so that it continues to benefit the school,” Ms Mwape said.
She also called on the school community to desist from vandalising the irrigation infrastructure and other school property.
ZANIS reports that Ms Mwape stressed the need for teachers, learners and members of the community to report anyone found damaging or stealing equipment from the programme.
And Lusenga Secondary School Head Teacher, Bridget Changwe commended the Government for introducing the irrigation programme at the school.
Mrs Changwe said the programme will improve agricultural production and support the School Feeding Programme.
She explained that 30 percent of the produce will be used for the School Feeding Programme, while the remaining 70 percent will be used by the school to support its agricultural activities and other needs.
Mrs Changwe said the programme will also equip learners with practical agricultural skills and reduce the school’s dependence for mealie meal.
She said the school will ensure that the irrigation facility is properly maintained and used to support agricultural production.
