Technology expert John Tshin-seki has urged Zambia to establish its own satellite within the next five years to improve internet connectivity, make digital services more affordable and reduce reliance on foreign providers.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Zambian Business Times-ZBT, Tshin seki said investment in local satellite infrastructure was necessary to strengthen the country’s digital independence and ensure reliable connectivity for businesses and individuals.
He challenged the reappointed science and technology minister Felix Mutati to priorities the establishment of a Zambian satellite, dubbed ZAMSAT, within his five-year tenure.
“Let us have our own satellite, ZAMSAT, which is going to make our internet connectivity affordable, faster and easier,” he said.
He further warned that relying on foreign providers leaves Zambia vulnerable to service disruptions should those companies decide to withdraw their services from the country.
Tshin seki cited Botswana and Angola as examples of African countries pursuing satellite technology, arguing that Zambia should also invest in infrastructure that supports its growing digital needs.
“Establishing a local satellite should form part of broader efforts to expand internet access and ensure that technology infrastructure supports economic activities across the country,”said Tshin-seki.
