A 19-year-old footballer has died after colliding with an opposing player during an amateur match between Chisichi FC and Zondola FC in the area of Chieftainess KAWAZA in SINDA District.

The deceased, BRIAN ZULU of Chisichi FC, reportedly lost consciousness and suffered heavy bleeding after colliding with 28-year-old GERALD BANDA of Zondola FC on Thursday.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer ROBERTSON MWEEMBA says ZULU was rushed to Away Clinic following the incident before being referred to Sinda Zonal Health Centre and later transferred to St Francis Mission Hospital for further treatment.

MWEEMBA said in a statement to ZNBC news that the player died at around 21:00 hours while receiving treatment.

He said the incident occurred about 15 minutes into the match when ZULU attempted to trap the ball but collided with an oncoming player.

MWEEMBA said the body was deposited in the mortuary at St Francis Mission Hospital in KATETE District, pending a post-mortem examination.

He added that police have opened an inquiry file into the incident.
